Le Capucin

November 6, 2024 Eat Drink Magazine

At Portsea’s beloved French cafe Le Capucin, there’s always a happy holiday feel in the air.  Buoyed by the esprit de corps of Le Cap Crew – the affectionate name for its team of passionate chefs and friendly front-of-house team – the beachside café has gained cult status among customers who love its casual setting, delicious food and exceptional service.

A familiar landmark to residents and a welcome surprise for out-of-towners, the little duck egg-blue cafe is an experience not to be missed. Owners Kirsty and Loïc Duchet have created a special destination, bringing authentic French fare to Portsea.

Le Capucin’s baristas serve Five Senses Coffee your way all day. Strolling along the nearby pier, coffee in one hand, croissant in the other, it’s easy to imagine you’re on the Côte d'Azur.

Select from an assortment of hot or cold dishes for lunch. Breakfast brioches, soups, summer salads, omelettes and baguettes can be enjoyed inside the café, on its outdoor terrace, or at one of the many picnic tables dotting the adjacent sprawling green lawn.

Le Capucin’s housemade beef bourguignon and chicken and leek pies are favourites and can be purchased individually or in family sizes. Take-home meals also include quiches, French onion soup and chicken liver parfait.

Be sure to add Portsea’s own French café to your list. Le Capucin is a breath of fresh air.

Opening hours: Monday-Sunday 8am-3pm; warmer months 7am-4pm
