Southern Seagreens

November 6, 2024 Eat Drink Magazine

From an underwater forest beneath the sea off the Flinders coast, the team at Southern Seagreens farms one of the most densely nutritious vegetables on the planet – native kelp.

Regarded as a ‘superfood’, seaweed is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and is prized for its delicious umami flavour. Home cooks and restaurant chefs love the versatility of Southern Seagreens products, incorporating them into their everyday cooking and using them to create inspiring dishes.

Supporting Southern Seagreens isn’t just good for your health, it’s good for the health of our planet – the business representing a model of regenerative sustainability. It all began when founders Cam, Bert and Rob won a climate action grant to help establish a seaweed nursery. Seaweed is a remarkable, zero-input crop, which requires no arable land, fresh water or fertilisers. It also improves the marine ecosystem as it grows. Protecting this valuable resource, Southern Seagreens divers hunt the invasive species wakame in southern Port Phillip. While removal of wakame helps preserve native kelp populations, it has the dual benefit of adding another offering to the product range – dried wakame is a hit.

Southern Seagreens products are available from a growing list of local retailers, including Torello Farm, Hawkes Farm, and the General Stores of Flinders, Shoreham, Merricks and Somers. Customers can also visit the warehouse store in Dromana to explore the range.
